Methods

  • Paste quoted text from the Methods section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks or a bullet mark:

Furthermore, the Generalized Estimating Equations model adjusted for age, duration of diabetes, and total energy was performed to evaluate the between-group and within-group differences in terms of fat and anthropometric indices. In addition, generalized linear models adjusted for age, weight, duration of diabetes, total energy, and the outcome baseline value were used to compare the groups in terms of depression, anxiety, biomarkers, and nutritional parameters.

Researchers want to evaluate the differences between the three (two test groups and one control group) groups of participants in terms of their physical proportions, weight, and size after the clinical trial. They are also looking to measure the difference in the participants’ non-physical factors, like depression, anxiety, nutrition, and biological state. To do this accurately, they used statistical models that would take into consideration the participants’ age, duration of diabetes, and total energy so that there were no inaccuracies or bias in the final data.

Introduction

  • Paste quoted text from the Introduction of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

Given the high prevalence of polypharmacy among patients with diabetes [6], non- pharmacological treatments, such as dietary modifications and alternative therapies, are expected to be more effective than pharmacological approaches [7]. Factors such as the cost of treatment, side effects of medications—particularly antidepressants—and the negative psychological impacts of polypharmacy on patients and their families further highlight the necessity of exploring non-pharmacological therapies.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

Patients with diabetes are usually using multiple medications to manage their disease or other conditions. This can easily lead to mental fatigue for them and their families due to the potential side effects of medication and the expenses associated with them. For this reason, it’s important to explore other avenues of treatment, like diet and alternate therapies, that don’t focus on medication.

Results

  • Paste quoted text from the Results section in the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

A comparison of the two intervention groups also showed that an anti-inflammatory diet, along with acupuncture, compared to diet alone, led to more reduction (4.6 vs.1.5%) in abdominal obesity at the end of the trial. As it was represented in Table 4, acupuncture, along with an anti- inflammatory diet, improved depression and anxiety compared to diet alone and common treatment at the end of the intervention.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The result of this study shows that when comparing the two test groups, one that only had dietary changes and the other that had acupuncture treatments alongside diet, the latter group had an improvement in their depression, anxiety, and abdominal obesity.

Discussion

  • Paste quoted text from the Discussion section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

Evidence suggests that improvements in mental health can enhance adherence to dietary and medical recommendations among diabetic patients. Our clinical trial concluded that combination therapy can improve depression and anxiety by 20%.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The trial in this study has concluded that combination therapy (diet + acupuncture) can help with depression and anxiety, with the difference being an improvement of 20%. Other studies have shown evidence that patients with improved mental health are more likely to follow dietary and medical recommendations. Thus, doing both therapies in conjunction is likely to provide the most benefit to the patient.

Future Directions

There seems to be a substantial amount of evidence from previous research, as cited by the article, that shows acupuncture can improve mental health. This paper specifically focuses on patients with diabetes and combination therapy. The paper cites stresses related medication, such as price and side effects, as a reason for why patients may feel fatigued with their diabetes treatment plan. However, acupuncture is not as accessible to the general public either. For future research, it’s important to determine if acupuncture specifically is the only type of therapy that can assist in tandem with an anti-inflammatory diet. Are there other therapies that improve depression or anxiety that can also help patients with diabetes?

Difficult Material

In the discussion section, the authors discuss how acupuncture can help repair damage to neurons and strengthen functional connectivity. They also mention how it helps with regulating key proteins and downregulating neuropeptide-Y. I found that section a bit difficult to understand, as I’m not familiar with the terms and how they would relate to patients with diabetes and depression. I believe someone well-versed in how acupuncture works and how it affects the body would be able to explain that correlation to me in simpler terms.

Eligible patients were randomly selected from those referred to a diabetes clinic affiliated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Before the trial commenced, the study was explained to the eligible individuals, and if they volunteered to participate, they signed a written informed consent form. Eligible individuals were assigned to one of three groups: (i) an individualized anti-inflammatory diet combined with acupuncture therapy, (ii) an individualized anti-inflammatory diet alone, or (iii) a control group receiving standard treatment and dietary recommendations. Importantly, all three groups received standard treatment, which included medications, a weight-loss diet for overweight and obese participants, and general healthy dietary recommendations, throughout the duration of the study. Patients were instructed to report any changes in the type and dosage of their medications during the study period.

Study participants were randomly selected from patients being treated at an outpatient ambulatory clinic that works with Tehran University of Medical Science. They were informed about the details of the study, and those who volunteered to participate signed a consent form. Irandoost et al. (2025) assigned the participants to three sample groups following differing interventions. The first group received a personalized anti-inflammatory diet combined with acupuncture therapy. The second group received only a personalized anti-inflammatory diet. The third group received standard treatment and dietary recommendations, serving as a reference group for comparison with the intervention groups to assess the effectiveness of the interventions. All participants across three groups were patients with type 2 diabetes and depression who received standard treatment. The standard treatment included medication, weight-loss diets for participants who were overweight or obese, and general healthy eating plans. Researchers instructed participants to report any changes in the type or dosage of medication they took during the study.
    Additional Future Directions:
    · What future research do you think should follow up on this work?
Irandoost et al. (2025) suggest that the combination of acupuncture and ant-inflammatory diet may improve mental health, glucose, including HbA1c, levels, and abdominal obesity. Another direction for future research could be to examine the barriers that individuals with type 2 diabetes and depression face in continuously maintaining acupuncture and anti-inflammatory dietary interventions on a regular basis. Therefore, another future research question could be: What barriers might individuals with type 2 diabetes and depression experience when they follow a combined acupuncture and anti-inflammatory dietary interventions on a regular basis?

    · Try to explain the difficult materials to the original poster as best as you can. (This is where you can help them understand what they found difficult.)
The use of acupuncture may help repair structural damage to neuron and reduce structural damage of glial cells, which are supporting cells in nerve tissue that help protect and support neurons and maintain their proper function, in a brain region, including the hippocampus and frontal lobe. Acupuncture may also strengthen functional connectivity and structural connectivity in the brain. Additionally, acupuncture might regulate the expression of key protein in the CaMK signaling pathway, which is associated with depression. Acupuncture also inhibit the production of neuropeptide Y which acts as chemical messengers in brain, slow down digestion, and increase serum levels of glucagon like peptide 1.
New Difficult Material (according to you):
    · What did you not understand about this paper that someone else may be able to help you with? Or, if you understood everything, what did you find most challenging to understand?
The most challenging aspect was interpreting the study flow shown in Figure 1 and table 2, the participants’ demographic information. While I could understand the progression from recruitments and randomized group allocation to follow up and final analysis, it was difficult to identify and cross reference which specific groups or participants characteristics corresponded to the various figures presented in the table 2 because numerous values were listed across different stages and groups, I had to constantly verify and compare the data to determine exactly which participants or group each figure represented. Hence, although grasping the overall study content was not challenging, integrating and cross-checking the detailed information proved difficult.
