Methods

Environmental Effects on Mental Health Worksheet

Methods:

  • Paste quoted text from the Methods section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks or a bullet mark:

Chronotype had been defined as the mid-sleep time between sleep onset and wake-up time on free days (Mid Sleep on Free Days, MSF). However, some individuals with extreme chronotype may accumulate sleep debt during the school days and compensate in free days, which would be related with higher MSF

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The researchers measured chronotype using the midpoint between a students’s time of falling asleep and waking up on days when they were free from school/work schedules. Students that may have had to wake up very early for school when their body prefers sleeping late may have to sleep longer on free days (weekends and holidays) to make up for the accumulated sleep loss over the week. This was a variable that could have affected the researcher’s MSF calculations.

Introduction

Introduction:

  • Paste quoted text from the Introduction of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

We hypothesized that bad sleep patterns, such as insufficient sleep duration of school days, late chronotype, short napping time and high SJL were positively associated with mental health problems, which may be different among various educational stages.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The researchers proposed that unhealthy sleep patterns could be linked to poorer mental health, and that this relationship might be different depending on the educational level of students.

Results

Results:

  • Paste quoted text from the Results section in the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

When we examined the association between sleep duration on weekends and psychological distress, we found students with short duration had more severe distress statistically for elementary and senior high school students. Napping shorter time for elementary school students (vs 0.5–1 h) was related with more severe distress (aOR = 1.35; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.67), while napping longer (≥ 1 h) for junior high school students was positively correlated with less distress (aOR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.52, 0.73).

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The researchers found out that students who slept less tended to experience more psychological distress. In particular, elementary and senior high students who took naps of less than one hour had substantially higher odds of experiencing severe distress compared with students napping longer than an hour

Discussion

Discussion:

  • Paste quoted text from the Discussion section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

Overall, sleep deprivation on school days, late chronotype and SJL were found unfavorable factors for the poorer psychological well-being and greater distress, which may indicate that establishing healthy sleep habits is urgent and critical for students.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The researchers believed that insufficient sleep, and social jetlag are associated with poorer mental health, so encouraging healthy sleep habits may be very important for students.

Future Directions

Future Directions:

  • What future research should follow up on this work?

Future researchers should conduct longitudinal studies that follow students over time. This would help determine whether poor sleep contributes to mental health problems, whether mental health problems contribute to poor sleep, or whether the relationship works in both directions.

Difficult Material

Difficult Material:

  • What did you not understand about this paper that someone else may be able to help you with? Or, if you understood everything, what did you find most challenging to understand?

Understanding the statistical results, especially the adjusted odds ratios and confidence intervals and how they illustrate the strength of the association between various sleep patterns and psychological discomfort was the most difficult aspect.
