Methods
The researchers reached out to several companies and screened over 500 workers who were interested in joining the study. In the end, they had complete data from 424 people to analyze.
Introduction
Working night shifts disrupts the body’s internal clock so much that a major health organization officially flagged it as a possible cancer risk.
Results
Compared to workers with regular schedules, shift workers were more likely to smoke, have poor sleep quality, and have a higher BMI, and they drank more caffeinated beverages. Shift workers were also less likely to get high levels of vigorous exercise than non-shift workers (about 23% vs 28%).
Discussion
The more psychological distress a person reported, the worse their sleep tended to be – and this held true even after accounting for other factors like age, activity level, and caffeine intake.
Future Directions
Since this study only looked at workers at one point in time, future research should follow shift workers over a longer period to see whether starting shift work actually causes worse sleep, rather than the two simply being linked.

Sleep quality was calculated by adding up the scores of the different sleep ‘Factors’. Factor 1 is how the subjects perceived their own sleep quality and how long it took the subjects to fall asleep at night. Factor 2 is based on how long the subjects slept for and much time the subjects actually spent asleep while in bed. Factor 3 is based on how many times the subject woke up at night, whether they were on sleeping medication, and how much dysfunction they experienced during waking hours.

The limitations of the study were clearly defined at the end of the paper. One of these limitations was the predominance of male participants. Following up with a diversified demographic could be beneficial for further topic exploration.

It was also difficult for me to follow the models, but from my understanding they are using odds ratios and confidence intervals to more accurately run the data collected. In basic terms, an odds ratio compares likelihood of an event to likelihood of an event within the control factors. The confidence variable is a measure of how accurate the odds ratio will be. The chart reflects the data after running these models. This may be somewhat oversimplified, and I would also be keen to hear another student’s interpretation.

I found the written section on covariates challenging to understand when I first read it. It took subsequent readings to fully grasp what the authors were trying to convey.
