Methods

Methods:

  • Paste quoted text from the Methods section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks or a bullet mark:

We did this single-blind, randomised controlled trial (OASIS) at 26 UK universities. University students with insomnia were randomly assigned (1:1) with simple randomisation to receive digital cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for insomnia or usual care, and the research team were masked to the treatment.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The researchers were conducting a randomized controlled study in which students at the university with insomnia were to either receive an online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) program for insomnia or receive their usual care. The researchers remained unaware of which treatment each participant received during the study.

Introduction

  • Paste quoted text from the Introduction of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

The interventionist-causal model approach to establishment of a casual association is to manipulate the hypothesised mechanistic variable and observe the effect on the outcome of interest; if a casual association exists then the outcome variable should alter.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

Sleep problems may not only be a symptom of mental health disorders but could also play a role in causing them.  Poor sleep can lead to a cycle where mental health declines, everyday tasks become more difficult, and getting enough quality sleep becomes even harder.

Results

  • Paste quoted text from the Results section in the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

Regarding the primary measures, the sleep treatment was associated with significant reductions, at all timepoints, in insomnia, paranoia, and hallucinations compared with the control group (p<0·0001). The reduction in insomnia after treatment was large, while the reduction in psychotic experiences was small.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The students who received the sleep treatment showed much better sleep than those in the control group. They also reported fewer symptoms of paranoia and hallucinations, but the changes in mental health were less noticeable than the improvements in sleep.

Discussion

  • Paste quoted text from the Discussion section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

This work can be taken forward in several possible ways. Determination of the mechanisms linking insomnia to psychotic experiences will shed further light on the causes of psychosis and potential enabling treatment improvements.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

Future research could focus on understanding the relationship between insomnia and psychotic experiences. A better understanding of this relationship may lead to improved treatments and provide more insight into the causes of psychosis.

Future Directions

  • What future research should follow up on this work?

Future studies could explore whether improving sleep benefits the mental health of different populations, such as older adults and individuals with diagnosed mental illnesses. Researchers could also examine whether these mental health improvements continue over the long term and compare the effectiveness of different approaches to improving sleep.

Difficult Material

  • What did you not understand about this paper that someone else may be able to help you with? Or, if you understood everything, what did you find most challenging to understand?

The most challenging aspect of this paper was interpreting the mediation analysis and how it was used to show that better sleep contributed to improvements in mental health symptoms. I understood the main findings, but I would like a more detailed explanation of the statistical methods.
