Methods

Data in this study were collected as part of the Christchurch Health and Development Study (CHDS), a longitudinal study of a cohort of 1265 children born in the Christchurch, NZ urban region during a 4-month period from April to August 1977. We used a combination of data sources and methods to create an estimate of air pollution for the birth cohort in childhood from the prenatal period and then annually until age 10 years. 

Translation:

The data for this study was collected from a sample size of 1265 children, born in Christchurch, New Zealand. These kids were part of a study that followed them over time and included children born during a 4-month period from April to August 1977. Different methods were used to estimate the child’s exposure to air pollution each year, starting from pregnancy until they were about 10 years old.

Introduction

Research suggests that air pollution exposure in early life can result in lasting injury to cells and tissues that increases risk of disease in childhood, with effects persisting across the lifecourse (Barker, 2004). A growing body of evidence suggests that air pollution exposure, especially during the prenatal period and early childhood may have negative impacts on brain development as well as other markers of childhood and adolescent functioning. 

Translation:

This research suggests that if a child is exposed to polluted air during the developmental stages in their life, there is a risk that it may cause damage to their cells and tissues. This exposure may negatively affect brain development, influence how a child develops and increase the risk of health issues that may persist throughout their lifetime.

Results

In terms of mental health outcomes, Class 2 (Elevated Pre-School) had close to a higher odds of suicidal ideation (OR = 1.96[1.00–3.80]) and substance abuse problems (OR = 4.92[1.52–15.95]), Class 3 (Persistently High) had a lower odds of anxiety (OR = 0.58[0.38–0.89]) and had higher odds of substance abuse problems (OR = 2.71[1.19–6.20]) and Class 4 (High Prenatal and Postnatal) also had a higher odds of substance abuse problems (OR = 3.54[1.02–12.31]).

Translation:

The researcher found that children exposed to air pollution from such a young age showed different patterns of problems with mental health outcomes. Some had  higher chances of suicidal thoughts, some had issues with substance abuse, yet another group had lower chances of anxiety.

Discussion

This study is unable to explain the differences in associations across exposure trajectories; however, they may reflect diverse neurodevelopmental sensitivities at different ages. The prenatal and postnatal periods are critical for brain development, which could explain why high prenatal and postnatal exposure was linked to slightly different outcomes to later childhood exposure which may have more influence on cognitive or emotional regulation, potentially contributing to conduct problems and lower educational attainment.

Translation:

The study was unable to fully explain why different patterns of air pollution exposure were linked to different outcomes. The timing of exposure during a child’s development may influence how it affects brain development, emotional regulation, and cognitive abilities.

Future Directions

Future research should study the effects of a healthy environment with clean and fresh air and how reducing exposure to air pollution during prenatal development and childhood affects mental health and brain development outcomes. Researchers could compare children exposed to lower levels of air pollution with those exposed to higher levels to determine how providing a cleaner environment with no or negligible pollutants in the air may affect a child’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioural outcomes. 

Difficult Material

The most difficult part of this paper to understand was the statistical analysis and how the researchers grouped children based on different air pollution exposure patterns. Understanding the meaning of the odds ratios and how they were used to link and study the relationship between air pollution exposure and mental health issues was challenging. However, the purpose of the overall study and findings themselves were understandable.
