Methods
• Paste quoted text from the Methods section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks or a bullet mark:
The experiment comprised a self-report questionnaire battery and fMRI paradigm with a cross-sectional design. fMRI results will be reported elsewhere.
• Write your translation on the next line:
This experiment involved the participants answering to a collection (battery) of surveys about themselves. Brain scans to measure brain activity (functional magnetic resonance imaging/ fMRI) while completing a specific task (paradigm) were used as well. Results were collected once at a single point in time (cross-sectional design) with the fMRI findings being reported in a separate research paper.
Introduction
• Paste quoted text from the Introduction of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:
In addition, experiencing ruminating thoughts about the loss during grief was found to be related to maladaptive grieving and the development of symptoms of depression.
• Write your translation on the next line:
In addition, individuals who keep thinking deeply and slowly (ruminating) about loss during grief, were found to grieve in away that was negative and harmful (maladaptive grieving) towards overcoming the loss and increased risk for developing symptoms of depression.
Results
• Paste quoted text from the Results section in the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:
MDI scores ranged between 1 and 45 (Mdn = 9.00, IQR = 7.00–21.00) in the heartbreak group.
• Write your translation on the next line:
Results taken from the heartbreak group using the Major Depression Inventory (MDI), a survey for measuring depression symptoms, ranged from 1-45. 1 meaning almost no symptoms of depression and 45 meaning many symptoms with 50 being the max score. 9.00 is the middle number of all the scores (Mdn/median). 7.00-21.00 is the range which the middle 50% of scores fell into (IQR/interquartile range).
Discussion
• Paste quoted text from the Discussion section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks: (The text I pasted has quotation marks in it).
The ‘‘lack of positive affect” component is primarily defined by positive affect scores, as measured with the PANAS.
• Write your translation on the next line:
The lack of feelings of happiness and well-being (“lack of positive affect”), is measured by positive affect scores from a survey called Positive And Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). PANAS measures the amount of positive and negative emotions an individual experiences.
Future Directions
Future research should be conducted as a longitudinal study to examine the results of the self- report questionnaire battery. This will be helpful to determine how symptoms of depression change over time following a stressful event.
Difficult Material
What I found hard to understand were the graphs used to illustrate the questionnaire results. For example, Fig 1 shows the results of the MDI from both the relationship and heartbreak groups. However, it is not clear to me what the markers represent or the line passing through them mean. Furthermore, the description of the graph below is hard to decipher with all the numbers and symbols and is not clearly explained in the article.
