Methods

Methods:

  • Paste quoted text from the Methods section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks or a bullet mark:

To derive a valid measure of green- space, we firstly masked the study area by the impervious surfaces to create an intermediate pervious surface dataset. We then masked other land cover features not indicative of greenspace, including mines or dumps, sand or gravel, landslides, permanent snow and ice, gravel or rock, lakes or ponds, and rivers and estuarine open water, using LCDB values closest in time to the GISD30 surfaces.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The researchers wanted to get an accurate measure of the green spaces, they first remove all built up areas for example roads, parking lots and buildings which are known as impervious surfaces. The researchers then removed areas that aren’t green spaces, even if they weren’t built on such as mines and gravel pits, landslides, snow and ice or lakes and ponds. They then only used LCDB values that were closest in tome to the GISD30 surfaces.

Introduction

Introduction:

  • Paste quoted text from the Introduction of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

Whilst the aetiology of mental health conditions is complex, individuals’ mental health is shaped by different social, economic, and physical environments operating at different stages of life (Allen et al., 2014).

  • Write your translation on the next line:

Although the cause of mental health conditions is complex, we know that they do not have one singular cause, it can be influenced by many different factors such as social environments, different economic environments as well as physical environments. This shaping can happen at various stages throughout a person’s life.

Results

Results:

  • Paste quoted text from the Results section in the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

Notably, cohort members with below-average greenspace availability in childhood tended to be of Ma ̄ori ethnicity, from a single-parent family, low family living standards, reside in densely populated areas, and exposed to moderate levels of air pollution.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

Participants who grew up with lower-than-average access to greenspace were more likely to be Māori, live in single-parent households, come from families with lower socioeconomic status, live in densely populated urban areas, and be exposed to moderate levels of air pollution.

Discussion

Discussion:

  • Paste quoted text from the Discussion section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:

According to nature-based resilience theory, these beneficial effects of greenspace may be attributed to enhanced biological, psychological, and social resilience resources (White et al., 2023). In addition, this study found that the associations between greenspace availability and depressive symptoms in adulthood are sensitive to buffer size, with significant associations observed within buffer sizes of 1500m to 2000m.

  • Write your translation on the next line:

The effects of greenspace could be attributed to resources such as biological, physiological, and social resilience. Which is a theory known as the nature-based resilience theory. The study additionally found that the correlations between greenspaces availability and depressive symptoms were responsive too, meaning that they were susceptible to changing results when given a buffer size meaning that they changed the size of the greenspace, they saw significant result changes with buffer sizes of 1500m to 2000m sizes.

Future Directions

Future Directions:

  • What future research should follow up on this work?

I think that expanding research on the effects of movement and exercise specifically when it is able to be done outdoors could be interesting. A study conducted on the general positive impacts of exercising on mental health could be extracted from prior research conducted.  Then taking those findings and then looking further into comparing exercising indoors, for example on a treadmill or an indoor bike vs. exercising in a park, running outdoors, biking or just movement in general such as yoga and strength training. This could be additional evidence to support this research paper and its call for more green space, if it was found that exercising outdoors had a greater positive impact on mental health than exercising indoors.

Difficult Material

Difficult Material:

  • What did you not understand about this paper that someone else may be able to help you with? Or, if you understood everything, what did you find most challenging to understand?

The statistical methods that were used to access the data were a bit unknown to me. Looking at the way that table 1. and table 2. were presented was not super clear to me, I understand that the variables were adjusted and unadjusted but I wasn’t sure what exactly was adjusted as in what combination of variables was used to produce each specific value.
