Participants responded to one item regarding how many hours they spend in a typical day using mobile internet (e.g., Smartphone, iPad). This survey questionnaire asked “In general, how much time do you spend online on your mobile device each day?”. The variable takes values in the range 0-24 h, which is used in this paper to measure internet use time.

The results in model 2 of Table 5 shows that the effect of greater internet use on mental health was significantly negative for female adolescents compared to male adolescents. The coefficient of the interaction term for internet use time and education level in model 3 is significantly positive, indicating that the longer the years of education, the more significant the negative impact of internet use time on mental health (β = 0.039, P<0.05).

Possible explanations are that online entertainment relive adolescents’ academic stress and become an entertainment platform for adolescents to relax and unwind.  Especially for adolescent users in rural underdeveloped areas, the emergence of shorts videos has filled the gap of information and knowledge that are difficult for them to access and enhances adolescent’s well-being to some degree.

Spending time on the internet has been a stress reliever for adolescents. For the adolescents who live in poorer areas with less access to resources, going on the internet exposed to short informative videos that allowed to learn new things. These can be reasons why being on the internet improves their well-being.

Future Directions

Future research on identifying at what time of the day adolescents typically use the internet. Additionally, they should identify how much time is spent on the specific activities rather than just the total amount of hours spent to help identifying if these activities have varying effects on the adolescent.

 

Difficult Material

I find it most challenging to understand the results sections. It can be confusing to understand all the data presented on the table. Even though they described what the data means on the table, it took me a while to gather a better understand and had to re-read and look at the table multiple times.
