Methods
- Paste quoted text from the Methods section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks or a bullet mark:
We conducted unadjusted and adjusted linear regression on the imputed analytic sample. Model 1 (unadjusted) investigated the associations between social media use and mental health, model 2 included the adjustment for baseline mental health problems, and model 3 (fully adjusted) additionally adjusted for gender, age, education, employment, and ethnicity.
- Write your translation on the next line:
Researchers ran this analysis in three statistical stages:
At first, they just studied the relationship between social media and mental health. Then they considered baseline for mental health problems. Finally, they included factors like gender, age, education, employment and ethnicity.
Introduction
- Paste quoted text from the Introduction of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:
Most previous studies in this area have explored the relationship between social media use and mental health using cross-sectional designs with nonrepresentative data. This restricts what temporal conclusions can be drawn about the relationship and how generalizable the findings are to the general population.
- Write your translation on the next line:
Past studies on how social media affected mental health used a method in which they looked at one person at a time. This failed to represent diversity of targeted population, making it hard to know whether use of social media actually causes mental health changes or even if it applies to everyone.
Results
- Paste quoted text from the Results section in the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:
once we adjusted for all confounders, this association was fully attenuated, and we found no evidence of increased mental health problems based on the frequency of viewing social media content.
- Write your translation on the next line:
After controlling all potential factors such as age, gender etc., this association completely disappeared. We did not find any indication that relates mental disorders to the amount of content watched on social media.
Discussion
- Paste quoted text from the Discussion section of the article on the next line. Do not include quotation marks:
Posting actively on social media may have negative effects on mental health because people may post unrealistic content about themselves or because they are replacing in-person relationships with web-based relationships
- Write your translation on the next line:
Regularly posting on social media could be harmful for mental well-being because people present themselves as overly perfect and mostly share best part of their lives or they start replacing their actual friends with online interactions instead.
Future Directions
- What future research should follow up on this work?
Future research should examine more specific types of things people do on social media use such as private messaging vs public posting. They should also include what type of content people actually view to link it to mental health. I think it would be interesting to do longer study to see if it affects mental health overtime.
Difficult Material
- What did you not understand about this paper that someone else may be able to help you with? Or, if you understood everything, what did you find most challenging to understand?
The most challenging part of this paper for me was to understand statistical methods used. Such as what “attenuated” means when dealing with associations and using imputations on missing data. It was cloudy understanding this part and how that changes what the results actually mean.
