Interventions targeting PSMU could be instrumental in improving sleep and mental health outcomes. Mental health professionals and health care providers could consider routine screening for PSMU in individuals presenting with depressive and/or anxiety symptoms, as well as sleep problems. Sleep hygiene education and interventions, such as cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), could be incorporated into intervention plans. These along with strategies for healthy SMU, such as setting boundaries on daily screen time and promoting alternative activities for relaxation, may help reduce PSMU and improve sleep health and potentially mitigate their impact on mental health.

Write your translation on the next line:

Mental Health Professionals can make beneficial contributions to patients/client’s mental health with those presenting with symptoms of depression, anxiety or sleep disorders by providing regular screening for PSMU. In addition to screening, mental health professionals can provide education on sleep hygiene, setting boundaries around screen time and alternative relaxation activities. For patients dealing with insomnia some strategies that have shown benefits including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT-I) in mitigating their impacts on mental health.

Future Directions

For future research, it would be beneficial to ask questions to the participants about stressors outside of SMU that may impact their mental health, general well-being and sleep issues (eg: constant loud noises at night disrupting sleep so they use their phone as a distraction, problems with significant other, financial difficulties).

Difficult Material

Difficult Material (from original poster or subsequent student):

What did the previous poster state was difficult to understand? (please copy and

paste their statement here):

Basically, I can understand the main purpose of this research paper that problematic social media use is linked to poorer mental health, at the same time sleep plays a mediating role. However, I found challenging is that whether social media use affects sleep or sleep also affects social media use.

Please try to explain the difficult materials to the original poster, as best as you can.

(This is where you can help them understand what they found difficult.)

My reading of this paper and the understand that I get from the questions on whether social media affects sleep is that, while people’s mental health is impacted by many variables. PSMU leads to people reporting more insomnia, anxiety and a decrease in well-being and sleep quality at rates 40-52% negative effects on mental health. As well in my reading the paper is more focus on putting down some metrics than trying to show a direct correlation-causation relationship.

New Difficult Material (according to you):

What did you not understand about this paper, that someone else can help with? If

you understood everything, then what did you find most challenging to understand?

The most challenging part of the paper for me to fully understand was the mediation modeling and the processes behind it for interpreting the data correctly.
